timbermont.be Facing south

2006-11-23

This picture is taken with the Giant Buddha behind me and shows the coast line of Lantau Island. One apparently differing fact about this large buddha is that it is facing North rather than the traditional South.

Perhaps one of the reasons I did not find the 'authenticity' is that people from Hongkong do not deal with their past in the same way as I do. When talking to a monk in the Po Lin Monastery, I started rolling a cigarette. He looked at me as if I were an alien. The last time he saw this 'act' was when he was 10... and it was performed by his grandfather. Now it was 'not done', 'oldfashioned', etc.

Apparently, the past lives a much shorter life in Hongkong than in Brussels :)
